Martha Ann Otjens

Birth Date: December 5, 1923
Death Date: February 1, 2017

Martha Ann (Kelly) Otjens, 93 of San Diego, California, passed away surrounded by family, on Wednesday, Feb 1, 2017. She was born December 5, 1923 in Detroit, Michigan to Anna and Neil Kelly. She married Otis “Odie” Otjens on August 1, 1941. They moved to San Diego in 1959 and called it home ever since. She is predeceased by her husband of 62 years, Odie.

Survivors include her 9 children, Joan Faustman, Nancy Palomino, Marilyn Schott, Alice Hiatt, Paul Otjens, Mark Otjens, John Otjens, Tim Otjens, and Diane Liotta; 26 grandchildren; 31 great-grandchildren; and 7 great-great-grandchildren. Also surviving are numerous nieces, nephews, and in-laws.

Martha loved games, jigsaw puzzles, sewing and crafting, chocolate, flower arranging, wearing bright colorful clothes, and creating celebratory events for her large family. Mostly though, she loved spending time with her family. Martha and Odie together enjoyed taking the kids camping, traveling to see family and the wonders of the world, making memories with their grandchildren hosting “GG Day”, and having fun with their annual family hayride. Martha started many family traditions that will live on in future generations; singing Christmas Carols, Easter fun and merriment, bridal shower games, family time working jigsaw puzzles, and trying out new recipes with family members. Martha also loved her St. Catherine Laboure parish and was active as a CCD teacher, participated on many committees, worked Cursillo weekends, cared for other parishioners, and made many people smile as “Granny Frog”. Martha was known for her easy smile, her passion for family, and love of God. Although her passing is sad for us, it is joyful for her.

  1. During this time of great sorrows, caring thoughts are with you and your family. So sorry for your loss. Hearts ache when they are overwhelmed with sadness and grief. May your loving memories of Martha bring a smile to your face and a calm to your heart, as you draw comfort from "the God of all comfort, who comforts us in all our trials," "while you throw all your anxieties on Him because he cares for You" (2 Corinthians. 1:3-4 – 1 Peter 5:7)
May the marvelous prospect that soon death will be no more, give you hope and bring you peace, for we are guaranteed, He (God) will swallow up death forever… (Isaiah 25:8). With deepest sympathy.

  2. I was so sorry to hear about Mom Otjens's passing. She was such an indomitable spirit and her warm and beautiful smile always made me feel welcome to sit down and listen about her latest adventures. Sending you all my love, condolences and prayers at this very sad time.
