Shirley Ann Gray

Shirley Ann Hunter was born in Bernice Louisiana on December 1, 1935 to the late Melissa Hunter. Shirley was the youngest of seven children. She accepted Christ at an early age and was baptized at Mount Olive Baptist church. She received her primary and secondary education at Mount Olive school where she also loved to play basketball.
Shirley met Lonnie T. Gray and they were united in holy matrimony on May 17th, 1952. During this union they were blessed with seven children. In 1953 she moved her family to San Diego where she resided until she was called home.
Shirley Gray was a devoted God fearing woman as a member of the Mount Zion Baptist Church until her health started to decline and she was not able to continue attending church regularly. She worked and retired from Scripps Memorial Hospital in La Jolla, CA after 21 years of service as a Supply Technician.
She truly loved her family and would do anything for them. Family activities included trips to Los Angeles to visit her sister Martha, fishing, roller derby, amusement parks, beaches, dominoes, and play cards with her grandchildren and great grandchildren.
She was well known for her southern hospitality and cooking. She would welcome you into her home and serve you some of her southern fried chicken, collard greens, corn bread and homemade dressing. Her banana pudding, tea cakes, sweet potato pie, and lemon meringue pie were a few of her specialties. She was a loving daughter, sister, aunt, niece, mother, grandmother, a great friend and mother-in-law.
On Saturday July 9, 2016, Shirley Ann Gray received her wings and transitioned home to live with our Lord and Savior. She was preceded in death by her mother Melissa Hunter, her husband Lonnie T Gray, her son Eldon Gray, three sisters, two brothers, and five grandchildren.
Her memories will live on forever with her loving, caring, devoted, children Bobby Gray of Vacaville CA, Janice, Lawrence, Patricia, Leon Gray and Linda Bethea (Douglas), Dorothy Gray (sister), 17 grandchildren, 15 great grandchildren, and 1 great great grandchild all of San Diego CA. A host of nieces, nephews, cousins and other relatives and friends.
