Albert Earl Mason's Obituary
Albert “Al” Earl Mason was born in Des Moines, Iowa on January 17, 1944. He was the only son of Earl Oscar Mason and Mary Louise Dawson.
Al, along with his parents and sisters, Sheila and Rosemary, moved to San Diego, California. After graduating from Clairemont High School, Al worked at The Union Tribune Newspaper as a photo engraver apprentice. It was there that Al met the love of his life, Lorane Avritt. They married on March 6, 1965. Soon after, Al was drafted into the Army and sent to Texas for Boot Camp. Al and Lorane were stationed at Fort Bragg, North Carolina, as he completed his elite training. As an Army Sergeant, Al served in the Vietnam War as a member of the 6th Psychological Operations Battalion headquartered in Saigon. After returning from the War in 1968, he was discharged from the Army.
Al became a Lithographer in the Printing Industry. He worked at the Union Tribune, Fyre and Smith Printing, Arts and Crafts Press, and UCSD Smurfit before retiring at the age 65.
In the late 80’s, Point Man Ministries began ministering to Al as he healed from the war, and it strengthened his relationship with the Lord. He utilized Point Man to minister to others. For him, it was not only about healing but helping them gain their freedom by deepening their relationship with the Lord.
Dad’s passions were building classic cars and truck models. He especially loved his model train display. His family cherishes memories of Bible studies, car shows, mountain biking, beach time on Saturday mornings, weekly Boy Scout meetings,
talking for hours about mystery books and movies, and Family Fun Nights. The Grandchildren and Great Grandchildren loved their conversations about life, military history, and cars, jets and planes; sharing their art and talents with him, walks or riding bikes to Subway to get peanut butter cookies, building models with him, playing checkers, and watching PBS kids. Dad very much enjoyed that his great granddaughter, Phoenix, knew him as Santa. A very fond memory of Grandpa was how he shed tears when we found out Matthew (great grandson) was a boy because "the Mason name would live on".
Dad is survived by his wife of nearly 60 years, Lorane; his sons Matthew and Daniel; his daughters-in-law Sara and Mari; his grandchildren Andrew Mason, Abigail Mason, and Danielle Nunez and great grandchildren, Matthew Mason, Robert Mason, and Phoenix Carr; his honorary granddaughter Emiko Sellers; very dear friend, Bailey Vincent and many nieces, nephews and cousins. He was preceded in death by his parents and his sisters.
He was a man that was hard not to love, any friend of ours instantly called him Dad or Grandpa, because that's just who he was. He loved deeply and unconditionally, he was always there to talk to, give advice or encouragement, or just listen. He was so proud of everyone in his family and loved to tell people. The times that he was happiest was when the whole family got together, he loved to watch the family that he made grow and be a family.
Our Dad was wealthy beyond belief in love and admiration from his children, grandchildren, great grandchildren, his brothers in Point Man, his brothers in the Revival Men’s Group and the Revival Church Family.
