We, who have known and loved Anthony have been celebrating his arrival since the moment we met. He was probably the funniest and definitely the kindest man one has ever known. Whatever Tony did, he did extraordinarily well. He knew all of Hollywood’s films, so he could have written, directed and starred in them. Tony nursed countless friends back to health or prepared them for the alternative with tenderness and compassion. Tony was a barber by day, working for many years at Village Barber Shop in Imperial Beach before moving to Crown Barber Shop in Coronado, and playwright by night. People came from miles around to have one of Tony’s cuts. San Diego was fortunate to have seen a staged reading of his works and one in particular, “The #5” was performed and awarded at the Actor’s Alliance of San Diego 2003 local Playwright’s festival. It was said that Patricia Neal wanted to star in one of his first plays.
Tony’s last years have been endured as the agonizing result of a debilitating stroke. He who cared for so many was now under the care of his close friends as well as his in-home caregivers Michelle and John, who served him with great affection. He leaves behind many adoring friends and family and his beloved brother Mark, to whom Tony dedicated his life. At last he has found freedom. Here’s to hoping Heaven serves martinis, easy on the vermouth.
