AugustinePadilla's Obituary
On October 16 after a heartbreaking five months, Gus left this world to join his beloved spouse of 68 years. who had predeceased him on May 12, 2015. He passed away at his home in Linda Vista, surrounded by his family. He was 87. Born in Tularosa, New Mexico, he cut his high school education short to join the U.S.Army in 1945. He volunteered for Jump School and became a Paratrooper. During a Military leave to visit his sister in Devine, Texas he would meet Oralia (Lala) Pompa who would become the love if his life. Called back to active duty, he became part of the Japanese mainland occupation force and witnessed the horrific aftermath of the Atomic Bomb. With a new appreciation for life he returned to marry his sweetheart on November 22, 1946. They had their first son. Alfonzo one year later. Gus and Lala moved to Los Angeles, California in 1948 and added three more children to the family: Cynthia, Anthony and Michael. Gus moved his family to San Diego in 1958 to accept a job with National Steel and Ship Building. His strong work ethic soon lead to a progression of promotions from Leadman to Foreman and finally to Superintendent of Burners before retiring in 1985. Gus and Lala loved life and enjoyed shared activities such as bowling,golf, fishing, Padres games and traveling in their RV. He will be greatly missed by his surviving children Al (Merry), Cyndee (Craig) Sabetti and Mike (Nancy); grandchildren Seann Padilla, Sara (Juan) Lovato, Stephanie (Derek) Carrillo, Iann (Kisha) Padilla, Melani Bruce,Stephen (Daniela) Sabetti and Simone (Ryan) Farabee and greatgrandchildren Lara, Abigail & Grace Lovato and Sadie & Catalina Carrillo. Son, Tony (Cheryl). preceded him in death.
A memorial Mass will be held at Holy Family Catholic Church on October 29. 2015 at 11:00 AM, followed by an interment ceremony at Miramar National Cemetery at 2:00 PM. In lieu of flowers donations can be made to the church where he was a long time parishioner.
