Edward James Reddington's Obituary
Edward James Reddington
A Life Well-Lived
January 28, 1939 – July 9, 2025
Edward James Reddington, beloved husband, father, grandfather, brother, and friend, passed away peacefully on July 9, 2025, at his home in San Diego. He was 86 years old.
Born in Boston, Massachusetts to Mary and James Reddington, Edward moved to San Diego with his family in 1955. He graduated from Point Loma High School in 1957 and embarked on a distinguished 39-year career with Safeway/Vons, where he became a respected leader in many departments.
In 1960, Edward married Bonnie, and together they raised two children: Joanne (born 1961) and Richard (1963). Despite his demanding work schedule, Edward earned an Associate of Arts in Business Management from Mesa College in 1972.
After retiring from Vons in 1994, Edward and Shirley traveled across the United States in their RV and later Ed returned to work part-time for the fleet division of Enterprise for nearly 20 years.
Edward found joy in his interest of cars, boats, camping, and sports, particularly football and baseball. His passion for these activities was passed down to his children, who share his interests to this day.
In 1987, Edward married Shirley, and they enjoyed a fulfilling life together until his passing. He loved his family, and it grew with his daughter Joanne’s marriage to Bill Bernard in 1990 and the birth of his grandson, Matthew, in 1995.
A man of unwavering kindness, Edward’s smile and laugh were infectious. He was happiest spending time with family, friends, and neighbors, creating lasting memories at both big and small gatherings.
Edward is survived by his wife, Shirley; daughter Joanne (Bill) Bernard; son Richard; grandson Matthew; his sister Nancy Peterson; and a large extended family of cousins, nieces, and nephew. His legacy of love, hard work, and joy will live on in the hearts of all who knew him. The world has lost a great man.
A funeral Mass will be held at St. Mary Magdalene on August 8, 2025, at 11:00 AM, with a reception following in the parish hall.
