Elliot P Hurwitz's Obituary
Elliot P. Hurwitz
March 1959 - April 2021
An angel has earned his wings and "I believe that angels breathe and love
will live on and never leave".....
Elliot had his wings here with us. He was always in service to
people. He was a master of kindness and courtesy.
It showed in all he did with his family, friends, with his
community, and with his career.
Elliot was born in in Washington, DC to Miriam and Harlan
Hurwitz. He is survived by his wife Maggie, son Chad , daughter
in-law Dana and his granddaughter Michelle. As well as mother,
Miriam, his twin Jody, his sister Susan, and brother Gary as well
as aunts, uncles, nieces, nephews, and cousins on both sides of family.
He grew up on the east coast and traveled to San Diego to pursue
his career in transportation. This is were he met his wife Maggie
and adopted his son Chad. He was always in service to people. He
believed we were put together to help each other and that is what
he did. He started in bus operations at County of San Diego and progressed
to MTS. He loved his career in the support of people from managing bus
operations to capitol projects. He managed the construction of the South
Bay
Maintenance Facility and other MTS buildings in San Diego. The
pride and joy of his career was making sure the people were served while he
managed the bus operations of MTS. He rode the bus to work so that he could
understand what the riders wanted and needed. He loved the details
and his success was in each details. He made sure the bus
schedules were top notch and the needs of bus riders were met. He
also managed the MTS softball team to a championship. Whatever he touched
his magic deemed success.
His family was top priority. His devotion to his wife and son
was unprecedented. From his love in everything he did
to honey do's, gardening, to teaching his son to how to study, and
encouraging his university education to how to throw a baseball,
He was a role model of respect, inspiration and healthy living
throughout his life.
In later years he was blessed with a granddaughter. She called
him Boppa, a name he wore with pride and joy. She was his most
precious love. His devotion to her gave him the light heartedness
that completed his life. He doted on her and her love brightened
his spirit. His love was all encompassing. It was always about who
needed support and laughter, who wanted advice or who wanted a smile.
He focused on the details and the big picture, which end result covered
everything. He touched all of our lives.
His home was his castle and his community "Bluffs of Fox Run" was
his joy. He loved working around the house and enjoyed the
responsibilities of beautifying his surroundings. He loved nature
from our Sunday drives to taking care of trees, plants, and served
on the" Bluffs of Fox Run" community board. He gave of himself tirelessly
to our "Bluffs" community while walking the community and seeing what needed
to beautify the surroundings. He will be honored in gratitude with a
beautiful garden bench and planted flowers.
He supported anything to do with Mother Earth and nature. His
travels drew him to nature from the ocean to the magnificent Red
Woods. He toured Europe on a bicycle and the east and west coast.
He loved getting his hands in the soil cultivating plants trees and
flowers; lilacs, plumerias gardenias, geraniums to the simplest
daisy to name a few. He loved it all. He shared a respect for our
mighty trees because he knew the trees gave the
earth beauty as well as temperature cooling, shade, and soil
stability.
He was a beautiful soul, a lovely human being and one of a kind.
We love you Elliot and you are in our hearts forever. Our world is a better
place
because of him. Thank you for everything!
Because of his love of the earth donations to benefit our earth are welcome
as well as to the Laurel Amtower Cancer Institute at Sharp Memorial Hospital
If the Bluffs of Fox Run had a Mt. Rushmore, most people in our community would agree that Elliot Hurwitz should be the first person to be honored in such a way. Perhaps the only person deserving of such recognition.
Elliot and Maggie moved to the Bluffs of Fox Run in 1983… among the first residents to move into this community when construction was completed that year. Over the course of the next 38 years, Elliot spent much of his free time volunteering as the Chair of the Landscape Committee and holding the role of Treasurer on our HOA’s Board of Directors. He helped us navigate many of the maintenance and improvement projects, often times taking the lead in vetting vendors to ensure we were getting the best possible value. He worked tirelessly with the Del Sol Landscaping, and the landscape maintenance companies that preceded them, in an effort to preserve and enhance the beauty of our community.
Living just across the street from the pool facilities, he also took the lead in addressing any issues we encountered with the pool and spa. If there was ever a question about the last time the pool decking was resurfaced, or when it’s time to start thinking about asphalt repairs, or if the tree trimming work was being performed properly… Elliot was always there with an answer that the Board could count on.
Aside from being hands on with just about every physical aspect of our community, Elliot also understood the importance of finding a balance between how much we contribute in HOA dues and how much is needed to maintain a healthy operating budget and reserve fund. Having served in the role of Treasurer for well over 30 years, he guided us through a few lean years and help get us to where we are today… with a healthy reserve fund balance in excess of $2.3 million.
Elliot was often among the first to welcome new residents to our community. He truly loved everything about the Bluffs of Fox Run and giving freely of his time for this place was never a difficult decision for him. Sadly, we lost Elliot on the evening of April 19th. He passed peacefully in his sleep after a long fight with cancer. It is a tremendous loss for all of us and he will be missed.
In recognition of his many contributions to our community, the Board of Directors has approved the purchase of a bench that will be placed at Liquid Amber Park, in front of the two Star Pines that he and Maggie donated several years ago. We hope you can join us for a dedication ceremony once the bench is installed. Date and time to be announced.
