Gary Lee McGrath's Obituary
Gary Lee McGrath age 70 of San Diego, California passed away peacefully at home on Tuesday May 5, 2020 surrounded by his beloved wife and three daughters. He was married to the love of his life Helen (McCormick) McGrath for 48 years. Born in Ely Minnesota, Gary was the son of the late Betty and Russell McGrath. Gary proudly served his country for 24 years in the United States Navy, retiring as a Chief Petty Officer in 1994. After retiring from the Navy, he worked with the United States Postal Service for 18 years. Gary was a loyal member of the Kearny Mesa Moose lodge since 1989 and enjoyed playing pool and spending time with his Moose family. He was also a proud member of the VFW and the American Legion. Gary was very proud of his family and loved spending time with his grandchildren. He enjoyed cooking and baking and shared this love with all 8 of his grandchildren. Growing up he enjoyed being outdoors, fishing and guiding canoe trips. His greatest legacy is as a husband, father, papa and brother. He was a gentle man who was loved by all who knew him.
Gary is survived by his wife, Helen; his children, Julie Jungheim (Todd), Carrie Rupert (Kevin), and Colleen Smith (Jon); his beloved 8 grandchildren, Allyna, Kira, Liam, Connor, Kyle, Chelsea, Ashley, and Jessica; his brother Bill McGrath (Kathy); his sisters, Peggy Houle and Patti Venstad (Steve); many adored nieces, nephews, cousins and all of his loving family in Ireland.
The family wishes to express their sincere gratitude to Dr. Biberston and the ICU team at the Naval Medical Center San Diego and the care team at Apreva Hospice for taking such excellent care of their dad. Services including Military Honors and a celebration of life will be scheduled at a later date.
