Gertrude Ann Simoes' Obituary
Gertrude “Trudy” Simoes died peacefully on May 28, surrounded by her loving Portuguese family, after a valiant fight against lung cancer. Born in Fuseta, Portugal in 1948, Trudy came to the United States at the age of four, when she was adopted by her uncle and aunt, Joaquim and Lucinda Simoes. A devoted daughter, she described her beloved mother and father as the “greatest joys of her life.” Trudy attended Hale and Einstein junior high schools and Madison High School in San Diego. Graduating first in her class of 1970, she received her undergraduate degree in teaching from the University of San Diego. She later earned a master’s in social work from San Diego State University. As a social worker with Child Protective Services of San Diego County for 35 years, Trudy championed with great passion, dedication and fearlessness the rights of abused and neglected children. Her greatest heartbreak was that she was not able to save every child who was referred to the agency. An avid reader and writer, Trudy loved science fiction, fantasy and historical fiction; her favorite book was Lord of the Rings.A viewing will be held at Clairemont Mortuary on Monday, June 3, from 4-8 p.m., with a reciting of the Rosary at 6 p.m. The funeral mass and interment will be held at Holy Cross Cemetery on Tuesday, June 4, at 11 a.m., followed by a reception at Our Mother of Confidence Catholic Church in University City.
