I met Hank in 1984, as a young man fresh out of college. We attended the same church. He arranged for me to go on a “ride along” with a member of his squad one Summer night. After the shift was over, the squad met up for coffee. Sitting and standing around their cars, they listened as Hank told them for the first time about his experience at the McDonald’s massacre. He told the story with great care, never sensationalizing anything he saw. He spoke as a leader, cautioning them all about what they might go through one day. I was in awe. I will never forget feeling the depth of his soul as he relived that day. His squad stood in absolute silence, knowing that they were with a great, yet humble, man. Rest in God’s peace, Hank.
