Jack and I became friends when he trained me to be his replacement as the CFO of Holland Motor Homes. In spite of his failing health at the time, I was struck and inspired by his cheerfulness. Over the years we remained close; he loved to hear amusing stories of the dealership and the doings of his many friends and former colleagues. We also bonded about sports generally, particularly the NFL. Each year we would "bet" on the games every week, and keep a running tally of the results. At season's end, the loser was obligated to buy tickets for a Padres game, attended together, so the winner could celebrate the season spoils. I thought I knew a lot about pro football, have paid close attention my entire life. And while standings between us were often close, I was never able to beat Jack over the course of a full season! Not once in 15 years!! He was mysteriously good at picking games...not an easy thing to do. The photo here was from our outing to see the Padres last year, Jack's final victory celebration. He was a shining light and I miss him greatly.
