Joann Marie Nickel's Obituary
Joann Marie Nickel, born October 25, 1943, in San Francisco and raised in Southern California, passed away surrounded by family in San Diego, CA. She began her career as a nurse before earning her Master of Arts in Education and teaching elementary school for more than 15 years with D.O.D.D.S. in Germany, South Korea, and Okinawa. She married Kenneth Witmer Nickel in 1968, and together they raised two children, Stacey and Daniel, until Kenneth’s passing in 1980. Known as “Tutu” to her grandchildren Gavin, Bailee, Chloe, and Caitlyn, Joann devoted her life to family, volunteering, and caring for others. She loved traveling the world, animals, gardening, crafts, and baking for everyone from neighbors to her dental office. Joann treasured cheering on her Padres and sharing simple joys like french fries and Coke with those she loved most.
