John Michael Devany's Obituary
Celebration of the life of Mike Devany
November 14, 1936-July 26, 2022
Dear Family and Friends,
It is with great sadness that I need to let you know that my Dad, Mike Devany, is no longer with us. He passed away peacefully in his sleep on July 26, 2022, from complications of COVID. In keeping with his wishes, there will be no services.
My Dad began life in San Diego on November 14, 1936, the son of John and Dorcas Devany. He grew up playing baseball, rolling bowling balls at the local lanes, and learning the bakery business from his father. After graduating from high school, he joined the US Army and spent a few years serving his country.
While serving in the US Army in Germany, he met and married his wife Gerlinde. After his tour of duty was completed, they returned to San Diego, where my dad re-joined his father in the bakery business. Also, two daughters were born to him, Marcella and Michele.
My dad worked long, hard hours for many years to provide for his family. He was a respected baker among his peers. When he retired from the bakery business in 2000, there were many accolades from the local press, and even a mention by the local Congressional Representative at the time, Brian Bilbray, from the floor of Congress.
After Gerlinde passed away, my Dad met Joyce Barber, and they spent the rest of life together. They enjoyed road trips, golfing, and my Dad finally had time to participate in amateur bowling tournaments. My Dad also loved cooking and enjoyed trying new recipes and learning how to grill the perfect steak.
Those who predeceased my Dad were his father and mother, his brother Thomas, Gerlinde and Joyce.
My Dad did not want any fuss regarding his passing, so arrangements will be simple and private. If you would like to remember my Dad, and if you are so inclined, the following were his favorite charities:
