I felt very nervous when I arrived at the federal building for my immigration hearing. I stepped into an elevator to go to the courtroom, and as I turned to press a button, I noticed an older gentleman hurrying toward it. Though he was still a few steps away as the doors began to close, I quickly reached out and held them open so he could get on in time.
He thanked me and walked in carrying a grocery bag that appeared to hold his lunch, some fruit, and a cup of yogurt. He asked how I was doing, and I admitted feeling a little nervous about the immigration hearing I was about to attend. He smiled and nodded like everything was going to be okay.
As the elevator reached the fourth floor, I stepped out and wished him a good day as he continued to the next floor. I then walked into the courtroom and sat, waiting anxiously until 8:30 a.m. When the judge’s name was announced, the Honorable John C. Williams, as I lifted my head to look, to my surprise, it was the gentleman from the elevator.
I am certain that Judge Williams made the right decision in my case that day. He stood up to ensure that justice and fairness prevailed, and my family and I are deeply grateful. His decision has made a tremendous difference in our lives. I only wish the world had more people like him.
Thank you, John. You made a big difference in our lives, and I offer my deepest condolences to the Williams family.
