Johnny Andrew Mendiola's Obituary
Johnny Andrew Mendiola, son of the late Juan Cruz Mendiola (+) and Elizabeth Baza Sudo of Yona, Guam, is survived by his 3 Brothers (Ronald, Richard, and Albert); 3 Sisters (Anne Marie, Christine, and Nanette); and numerous nieces, nephews, relatives, and friends. He was born in Agana, Guam on October 17, 1958, and was called to Heaven to join his Father, Juan, and Sister, Darleen, at the age of 64 on April 14, 2023.
Johnny spent 3 years of his childhood on Guam in the early 1970’s, attending St. Francis of Assisi Catholic School in Yona, then relocated with his family to San Diego in 1972 where he lived the rest of his life. He was a 1976 graduate of Kearny High School and participated in various sports such as Gymnastics, Track and Field, Soccer and Baseball. John also enjoyed the game of golf and was the Tournament Chairman for the “Hawaii Golfers of Orange County” as well as an avid softball player, playing the positions of Shortstop and 3rd Baseman with the Team “Crown & 7” and various other softball teams.
Johnny’s love for the culinary arts drove him to become a Franchise Owner of an L&L Hawaiian BBQ Restaurant in Oceanside of 20+ years. His dedicated and loyal staff (Fernando, Alma, Marcelo, Marcus, Marlyn, Jason, Danikka, and Theresa), who were considered his 2nd Family, coined him with the name, “Mr. John” and “Patron”. He and his staff worked tireless hours providing catering services for the San Diego State Athletic Department, Madres for the San Diego Padres, and many other organizations and functions.
He was a San Diego State Sports Fan, a New York Yankee MLB Fan and enjoyed watching his Nieces and Nephews play sports and other activities. He had a love for music with “Earth, Wind and Fire“ and “Santana” being a couple of his favorite artists and enjoyed the company of his close friends over a nice meal.
Johnny touched the lives of so many through his Catholic faith, love for family and friends, his hard work, and countless acts of generosity. He will forever be in our hearts.
