Maria Elena Niño was born in 1952 in Managua, Nicaragua to Elena Luisa Quinto and Raul Niño.
She came to the United States in 1970. She graduated from American University with a bachelor degree in Psychology and from Catholic University with a masters degree in Library science. She was a librarian in the Washington dc public library system from 1983 to 2008. She continued to serve the public as a librarian at Downtown San Diego library from 2009 to 2020.
She married Kenneth Walsh in 1981, had her son Charles in 1983, Alexander in 1986, and Andrew in 1987.
She was a dedicated, passionate, and patient wife and mother.
Maria's dedication to learning, access to information, and civic duty was much appreciated by her colleagues and patrons of her library. She instilled the virtues of education and knowledge of self to her three sons and husband.
All those who knew her well, or in passing, felt the strength of her character, the warmth of her disposition. She always carried herself with dignity. She had the ability to empathize with anyone, and offer good counsel without judgment. Her care for others was honest and genuine.
She had a strong moral compass that never wavered throughout the tempest of life. She was a private person, who had strong bonds with those who knew her well. She was a humble and modest person who chose to express herself to others through her deeds.
Prior to the advent of contemporary self care, she practiced and advocated ways to promote personal well-being.
She is survived by her mother, husband, three sons, and four grandchildren.
