Marlene Hoyt Brindell's Obituary
Marlene Hoyt Brindell, 90, died peacefully at her home on March 4, 2024. Marlene
was born July 10, 1933, to William Wellington Hoyt and Rosemary Cathryn O’Bryan
Hoyt in San Diego, California. A native San Diegan, Marlene attended Our Lady of
Peace and Cathedral Girls High School. She met Dick Brindell and they were married
in 1953. Dick’s military career caused their growing family to hopscotch across the
country until finally returning to and settling in to San Diego in 1967. Marlene was very
proud of her various roles including military wife, mother, medical secretary, grand-
mother, sister, and loyal friend. Marlene returned to the work force once her children
were all in school and took great pride in her career. She was blessed with good health
and, once she retired, was able to spend time with her grandchildren, trips to the Zoo,
baking, and travel with family. She joyfully attended countless graduations, weddings,
and reunions with her extended family and made sure to engage with everyone in at-
tendance. Her children hosted a 90th birthday party for Marlene in July of 2023 and
she proudly smiled for photos with everyone in attendance saying it was one of the
best days of her life. As she routinely did, she opened her home the weeks before and
after the event to host family and friends who travelled to enjoy the celebration.
She was preceded in death by her, husband, Charles R. “Dick” Brindell, sisters, An-
nette Hoyt and Sally Hoyt Jones, and grandson Christopher Burch. She is survived by
her seven children, Charles R. “Rick” Brindell, Jr. of Cape Girardeau, MO, Michael (Bar-
bara) Brindell of San Diego, Robert Hoyt Brindell of San Diego, Barbara (Gene) Burch
of San Diego, Ann Therese (Nelson) Romero of Riverside, CA, John (Karin) Brindell of
San Diego, and Kathleen (Bill) Barrett, of San Diego; her three sisters Rosemary Pe-
terson of Magalia, CA, Janet Flynn of Glendora, CA, and Kathleen Krug of Los Gatos,
CA, seven grandchildren, and four great-grandchildren. Her children are forever grate-
ful to her caring and compassionate hospice providers and healthcare aid.
Marlene was a founding member of Our Mother of Confidence Catholic Church in
University City and a funeral mass will be held on Tuesday, March 12, 2024 at 10:30 am
celebrated by Monsignor Mark Campbell. Burial will be at Fort Rosecrans National
Cemetery at a later date. Clairemont Mortuary is handling arrangements.
