Randall Alan Hern's Obituary
Randall Alan Hern of San Diego passed away peacefully May 15 with his family by his side. He was 62.
Randall -- or Randy, as he was known by family and friends -- was born Nov. 20, 1960, in Riverside. This lifelong Californian attended Granite Hills High School in El Cajon, moving on to earn his bachelor's degrees in Engineering Physics and Business Science, with a minor in math from the University of California, San Diego. He then transformed that education into a successful career in electrical and systems engineering.
In 1990, he would meet his future wife and soulmate, Karen, in a manner worthy of a Hollywood screenplay: On a heavily trafficked September day on the northbound I-15, two drivers passed each other in Temecula and followed each other to Rancho Bernardo where they stopped at a restaurant and introduced themselves. The two were inseparable ever since.
Randy and Karen married in 1998 and reared two children, Natalie and Emma. Although he enjoyed reading sci-fi books, outdoor activities, and tackling strategy games, Randy's main love was spending time with his family.
He is survived by his wife, Karen; his children, Natalie and Emma Hern; his mother, Betty Hitchcock; his stepmom, Carol Hern; and his siblings, Michael Hern, Heather Coleman and step-brothers Brian Hitchcock and Barry Hitchcock. Visitation will take place from 10 to 11 a.m. on May 31 in the Reception area at Greenwood Memorial Park, 4300 Imperial Ave., San Diego, followed by services in the adjoining Chapel. Private Interment will take place immediately afterward on the grounds.
Because Randy lived for his family and invested so much of his time in them, the family has set up a college savings account for his children at Mission Federal Credit Union under his wife’s name, Karen L Hern, please contact family for account number.
