Raymond Lloyd Irving's Obituary
Irving, Raymond 03/06/1930 ~ 08/26/2014 SAN DIEGO — Ray served his country with honor in the Korean War where he was wounded and awarded the Purple Heart. Ray was a Staff Sgt in the US ARMY and carried the Browning Automatic Rifle. As a squad leader, he was ordered to take his men out to the infamous Heartbreak Ridge, where they were engaged in a fierce fire fight when the radio started screaming “Get the heck out of there!” He thanked God they didn’t lose a single man. When he returned home to San Diego, he met the love of his life: Carolyn. They were married April 14, 1955. They raised a family of 10 children: Timothy, Terrence, Michael, James, Daniel, Nancy, Janeanne, Mary, Joseph and Sara. They have 23 grandchildren and 9 great-grandchildren. Ray is a Roman Catholic and his faith and love is anchored in the foundation of his trust and love in Jesus Christ. Ray and Carolyn raised their children to pray the Holy Rosary and to meditate on the mysteries. In business, Ray was the district manager of the Big Bear Markets chain in San Diego in the 1960s. Later in his career, he was very successful in the automobile business selling cars. He became a sales manager and later a became a general sales manager. He always put people’s needs first with courtesy, warmth, politeness and integrity. He would say: “Tell the truth, and you don’t have to remember anything.” * Ray is preceded in death by his parents Michael T. Irving and Mary D. Irving as well as his older sister Jean Marie Greene and younger brother John Kelly Irving. He is survived by his wife Carolyn, ten children and two older siblings Yvonne Schmitten and Michael “Tommy” Irving. The entire Irving family would like to sincerely thank the hospital staff, especially the staff in the Palliative Care unit at the VA Hospital. The Best of the Best! A vigil and Rosary will be said at 6:00 p.m. Tuesday, September 2, 2014, at Saint Joseph’s Cathedral, 1535 3rd Ave., San Diego, CA 92101. His blessed and holy funeral will be held at Saint Joseph’s Cathedral at 10:00 a.m. Wednesday, September 3, 2014. Interment will follow at Holy Cross Cemetery. Holy Mother Of JESUS Pray For Us.
