Bass, Sharon Marie's Obituary
Sharon (O’Leary) Bass was born on June 6, 1938, in Cook, Minnesota, and was the youngest of four children born to David and Vaughn O’Leary. She grew up in Cook before moving to Seaside, Oregon, and later settling in San Diego, California. A spirited and energetic young woman, Sharon attended Orr High School, where she was a proud cheerleader.
On March 8, 1958, Sharon married Howard Bass and began a fulfilling life as a devoted wife and mother. Shortly after their marriage, the couple made their home in San Diego, where they raised their family. Sharon’s life was centered around her faith, family, and community. She was an active member of Calvary Southern Baptist Church, where she taught Sunday School and found great joy volunteering in the nursery—babies always held a special place in her heart.
Sharon made an impact in her local community, serving on the board of Rainbow Little League, where she met and established a close and treasured friendship with Barbara Hogan, and volunteering at Kit Carson Elementary School, where she assisted both teachers and students. She was a warm and caring presence to everyone she met.
Known lovingly as “Grammy,” Sharon made it a tradition to give her grandchildren and great-grandchildren their first baths, a simple act of love that became a cherished memory. She always embraced her time with loved ones, prioritizing being a caretaker and seizing any opportunity to babysit for family and friends. She was a steadfast and passionate supporter of her family, cheering on her children, grandchildren, and great-grandchildren at countless sporting events. She was immensely proud that all her grandchildren attended Santana High School in Santee, California. Grammy’s presence at the ball fields and local events was welcomed and lovingly felt throughout the community.
In her later years, Sharon’s faith deepened as she listened to the teachings of Dr. David Jeremiah and often shared scripture with her family. Her life was defined by her unwavering love for her family and her role as a wife, mother, grandmother, and great-grandmother.
Beyond her love of family, Sharon enjoyed sports and was a devoted Kansas City Chiefs fan, never missing a chance to cheer on her favorite player, Patrick Mahomes. She had a fondness for trips to the casino. Her favorite outings were to Barona, where she’d savor tortilla soup with friends and unwind at her favorite slot machines.
Two songs held special meaning for Sharon: “I Can Only Imagine” by MercyMe and “The Dance” by Garth Brooks.
Sharon is survived by her beloved husband, Howard Bass; her children, Michael Bass, Bart (Amy) Bass (daughter-in-law, Darcy Lane), Bonnie (Bob) Palmer, and Nation (Val) Bass; her 14 grandchildren; and her 23 great-grandchildren. She is also survived by several O’Leary and Emery family members, numerous nieces, nephews, and friends who will carry her memory in their hearts.
The family would like to extend heartfelt gratitude to Howard, lovingly known as “Pa,” for his unwavering devotion and care for Sharon during her final years. Your steadfast love and dedication have been an inspiration. We love you, Dad.
Sharon’s life was a testament to faith, love, and the enduring power of family. She will be deeply missed but forever cherished in the hearts of all who knew her.
