Dr. Susan B. Shurin, former director of the National Heart, Lung and Blood Institute (NHLBI) and a prominent national researcher and clinician of pediatric blood diseases, died Aug. 31 in San Diego. She was 80. Her death occurred Read Obituary
Susan played an important role in my professional life as a mentor and nurturer of my career. While occupying one of the most important positions at NIH, she never failed to be down to earth, approachable, and a provider of sound advice. We did our medicine rotation together at Union Memorial. She was extremely gracious and stood out in her intelligence even among a very talented medical school class. She was also very pregnant, I believe with her first child, during the rotation. My memory may not be totally accurate but I believe I had to cover for her one night because she had the bad manners to deliver her child the night she was supposed to be on call. Special condolences to her brother, Stephen, was my squash partner for many years at the YMCA in Washington, DC.

Dr. Shurin was my Doctor when I was 15 to 18 years old. I had ALL and she and her wonderful staff of University Hospital Pediatric Oncology cured me. I am forever grateful to her. I haven't spoken to her since 2015 and for the past couple of months I had been thinking of her heavy and said it's about time to thank her again. I'm saddened to look her up and find this news but this day is destined for us all. I love you Dr. Shurin for adding more years to my life. 🕊️🙏🏾
