Ellen K. Sturtevant's Obituary
STURTEVANT, ELLEN FANE Ellen Fane Sturtevant, daughter of Judge James Fane and Josephine Fane, was born on June 23,1924 in Olean, NYand passed on April 15, 2012 in San Diego. She attended St. Mary’s School and graduated from Olean High School in 1941 . After attending Buffalo State Teacher’s College, she received her Bachelor of Science in Education and taught elementary school for two years in Rochester NY. Subsequently she moved to San Diego where she taught sixth grade at Chesterton School in Linda Vista. She met her future husband, ENS Hubert Brown Sturtevant, in 1947, and put her career on hold while the couple raised seven remarkable children. In 1982 at age 58, Ellen earned her Master’s degree at San Diego State University and was a Community College English instructor for eleven years at the Naval Training Center. She remained active in retirement, and enjoyed being a docent for the Star of India Auxiliary as well as a volunteer at San Diego Hospice for many years. She also was an alumna of Alpha Sigma Alpha sorority. Ellen was an active member of St. Mary Magdalene Church and belonged to the Hilltoppers and St. John’s Guild. She also served a term on the parish council. Ellen is survived by her loving husband, Stutz; her children, Andrew, Mari McEachern, Fane Wazny and Paulie Deshon of the San Diego area, her sons Pete and Hubie of Seattle and Tim of Lancaster, CA. She has fourteen grandchildren and two great-grandchildren. Memorial Mass will be held Saturday, April 21st, at 1:00 p.m. at the Church of St. Mary Magdalene, 1945 IIlion St. , 92110. Reception immediately following service in the church hall. In lieu of flowers, the family suggests donations to San Diego Hospice.
