George Ronald Pappas' Obituary
George Ronald Pappas, age 90, died peacefully at home on January 31, 2026, after a short illness.
George was born in 1935 and was the son of Samuel and Bertha (nee Shepard) Pappas of Lisbon, Ohio. He was preceded in death by his wife Joann Premus in 2011, his daughter Margaret in 2012, and siblings Agnes, Andrew, Gus, James, and Virginia. He was born in Lisbon, Ohio, and graduated from David Anderson High School.
George served two enlistments in the U.S. Navy and retired after 20 years as a Petty Officer Chief Mate. Between enlistments he worked at National Steel for 10 years in San Diego. He also owned a cleaning business for six years. In retirement George had many interests, chief among them was the NFL, especially the San Diego Chargers. Besides a day of rest, Sunday was a time to enjoy professional football.
He was active in Exercise 101, a senior class at MCAS Miramar where he cultivated friendships with Aurora, Bob and Mimi, Gayle, June, Juanita, Pat, Raellen, Richard and Loni, and Steve. He enjoyed travel and was in his eighties when he traveled the U. S. by car alone from California to Florida to Maine and back again to home.
He was a committed Christian and active in Horizon Christian Fellowship, and most recently Clairemont Christian Fellowship Church (Methodist).
George is survived by a daughter, Katherine Pappas of San Diego, Alvin James Meredith/Ronald James Pappas of Washington state, six grandchildren: Monique, Katherine, and Brenda Gould, Mark Armstrong, and Andrew and Paul Meredith, and several nieces and nephews.
He will be missed by many, including good friend Steve Munzinger and good friend and caregiver Greg Shepherd.
