Born on September 28, 1953 in Philadelphia, PA, John spent his early years there with his older siblings - sister Betty, brothers Pete, Frank and Rocky. In 1962 the family moved to San Diego, where he joined the cross country team and the track team at Point Loma High School. He graduated from San Diego State University. But it was at Point Loma where John first developed his passion for cars, beginning with his first car a 1963 Jaguar XKE. John worked at Liberty Mutual Insurance for 32 years. where his colleagues nicknamed him “Johnny V.” In 1988 he met Sarah, the love of his life, and they were married in San Diego on April 21 1991. John’s presence brought peace, harmony and joy to Sarah and her two children, Mason and Melody. In his later years, the absolute joys of his life were his grandchildren – Sophia, Mia and Luke. John and Sarah doted on them, spending many weekends going to their special places and making memories together. .The grandchildren fondly called him “ Handsome Papa”.
An extraordinarily generous man, he was always ready to help others in time of need. John was patient with those around him, especially with the foibles of his older brothers.
He brought laughter to us with his sharp wit combined with a great sense of humor. Always smiling, he was a rare gem of a person.
John went to the gym and worked out for years. He was strong both physically and mentally. He had to be, to endure the health challenges of his life after his heart transplant in 2019.
John was a gentle soul and will be deeply missed, but always remembered with love. He leaves behind his family –wife, Sarah, son Mason R. Smith, daughter Melody Myers, son-in-law Shaun Myers, and grandchildren Sophia, Mia and Luke Myers. His sister, Betty Kemper, and his 3 brothers, Pete, Frank and his wife Connie, Rocky and wife Louise, and several neices and nephews.
