My grandfather was a man I looked up to in every sense—a true role model who carried himself with respect, strong values, and a generosity that touched everyone around him. Growing up, he was the best father figure I could have asked for. His presence brought guidance, comfort, and strength, not only to me but to our entire family.
He was always there for my mother whenever she needed anything, offering his unwavering support and the kind of advice that only came from a life filled with wisdom and experience. He loved his family deeply, and we all felt that love in the way he cared for us, showed up for us, and made sure we were okay.
Some of my favorite memories with him are the simple, meaningful moments we shared. I’ll always remember going to Barona Casino together—laughing, eating, and enjoying each other’s company while we gambled. Another special memory was when he took me and my partner out to breakfast at IHOP when we first moved to El Cajon. It was such a small gesture, but it meant so much to feel welcomed, supported, and loved during a new chapter in our lives.
My last memory with him is one I will always hold close to my heart. I stopped by to drop off a package and stayed for a short while. I could see he wasn’t in the best condition, so I helped him wash some dishes and take out the trash. Before I left, he told me, “I hope you are doing well.” I told him I was, and said, “Tata, I love you. If you don’t have a ride to your appointment, please let me know ahead of time so I can take the day off to take you.” Even in that moment, I just wanted to make sure he knew he could count on me, the same way I always knew I could count on him.
I always tried to help him the best I could. Even with a busy life and multiple jobs, I made sure that if he ever needed me, I would be there. He was a huge part of my life and our family, and his absence will be deeply felt.
His legacy of love, strength, and generosity will live on in all of us. I am forever grateful to have had him in my life, and I will carry his lessons and his love with me always.
