Mary Harrar's Obituary
MARY HARRARPassed peacefully on Saturday, June 1, 2013, surrounded by her loving family. Mary is survived by her loving husband of 49 years, Don, four children (two sons, Roman and Mark Felix, preceding her in death), two daughters, Lucia Johnston and Vita La Fond, twelve grandchildren, twenty-two great grandchildren, and 2 great, great grandchildren.Remembered for her kindness to everyone and her devout Catholic faith, Mary would recite her daily rosary before her day began and remembered strangers, acquaintances and family equally. An avid crafter and sewing enthusiast, she formed a sewing group in her last two years (Sew Lo Mio) with monthly meetings which included sharing of ideas and projects between members. Their use of Facebook helped members stay abreast of meetings and events.Mary loved to host family and friends for holiday gatherings, complete with a Santa and gift giving for Christmas, and games and an egg hunt for Easter. No child was left out of a gift from Santa, and Easter games included adults and children competing for applause and good fun. She enjoyed her garden and camping every year at Camp Del Mar on the Camp Pendleton base in Oceanside. Family was welcome on weekends, and Mary enjoyed her week watching the ocean, a never-ending inspiration to her. She loved the water, having been an avid swimmer in her youth, swimming the bay with her father and sister when she was very young. Her grandchildren remember her most for the many trips she and Don planned for them during summer holidays. They traveled to many national parks, by van with a trailer being hauled behind. They recall their grandmother making the arduous trip on the Trinity River by raft, as they were on inner tubes free-floating down the river. Her “butts up!” thru the rapids is a source of much joy and laughter, recalling her getting wet, but bearing it happily with everyone else.Mary was also known for her sage advice and unwavering kindness and honesty, always encouraging peace and unity within her large family. She will always remain the “Rose of my life” to her loving husband, Don. Visitation Thursday June 6, 2013 10:00 am to 8:30 pm with Rosary at 7 pm. both at Clairemont Mortuary. Funeral Mass 9:00 am. Holy Family Catholic Church with Interment to follow at Miramar National Cemetery.
