Michael Eugene Lebo "Lebo", age 77, passed away peacefully on August 24, 2024, leaving behind a legacy of love and creativity. Born on December 31, 1946, in Newark, NJ, he grew up in Nutley, NJ, as the only child of Michael and Julia Helen Trechel. Michael’s educational journey began at Saint Mary’s Grade School, followed by Nutley High School, Newark College of Engineering, and culminating at San Diego State University, where he earned a degree in Electronic Engineering.
After a fulfilling 30-year career, Michael retired in the early 2000s. His retirement was filled with adventure and passion; he embraced hobbies such as amateur radio, drone flying, and cruising the world on various ships. Michael lived in several places, including Newark, Nutley, Oahu, Ensenada, San Diego, and Las Vegas.
On May 6, 1972, he married Laurel (Piskula) Lebo in Milwaukee, WI. He is survived by his beloved wife, Laurel, and their children: Eric Lebo, Sara Lebo, Amy Mabale(Xavier) and grandchildren: Michael Paul Mabale, and Edward Xavier Mabale. Michael cherished his special friends, including Allen Moeck, Alexis, Parisioners of St. Columba and St. John's Catholic Church in San Diego, Rhulin Hanna, Ketch Anderson, Vicci Havens and brother Adolfo Mercado.
A devoted Catholic, Michael held strong religious convictions in both the Ukrainian and Roman Catholic traditions. He served honorably in the Navy for six years, earning the rank of E-5 and receiving the Bronze Star and Meritorious Unit Commendation for his service during the Vietnam War. Michael finished his last 2 years on the USS Jouett(DLG-29).
Described by those who knew him as youthful, eccentric, inventive, creative, caring, and compassionate, Michael was a loving father and husband who enjoyed life to the fullest. He was passionate about creating new ideas, helping others, and making lasting friendships. His hobbies included local Ham Radio(Operator N6IEF), sailing, kite flying, and drone flying. Michael had a deep appreciation for music, particularly the works of Karen Carpenter, classical music, jazz, and any tunes you could dance to.
Michael Eugene Lebo will be remembered for his vibrant spirit and the joy he brought to those around him. He will be deeply missed.
